The Mother of the Quran

Surah Al-Fatihah is the opening chapter of the Holy Quran and is so important that Salah (prayer) is considered invalid without its recitation. In this tutorial, we will break down the translation of its verses so you can reflect on them during your daily prayers.

Praising the Creator

"Alhamdulillahi Rabbil 'Alameen" (All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds). This verse teaches us gratitude. We acknowledge that everything good comes from Allah, the sustainer of the entire universe. It is followed by "Ar-Rahman, Ar-Raheem" (The Entirely Merciful, The Especially Merciful), reminding us of His boundless love and forgiveness.

Acknowledging the Day of Judgment

"Maliki Yawmid-Deen" (Sovereign of the Day of Recompense). This verse grounds us. It reminds us that we are accountable for our actions and that Allah is the ultimate judge on the Day of Resurrection.

The Core of Our Faith

"Iyyaka na'budu wa iyyaka nasta'een" (It is You we worship and You we ask for help). This is the climax of the Surah, declaring our absolute monotheism (Tawheed) and complete reliance on Allah alone for assistance.

The Ultimate Prayer

"Ihdinas-siratal-mustaqeem..." (Guide us to the straight path). We end by asking for guidance—not just any guidance, but the path of those whom Allah has favored, avoiding the path of those who earned His anger or went astray.
