The Three Levels of Faith
In the famous Hadith of Jibril, the religion of Islam is broken down into three levels: Islam (outward submission, like prayer and fasting), Iman (inward belief in Allah, the angels, books, etc.), and finally, the highest peak: Ihsan.
What is Ihsan?
When the angel Jibril asked the Prophet (PBUH) about Ihsan, he replied: "It is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then truly He sees you." (Sahih Muslim). Ihsan translates to spiritual excellence or perfection in worship.
Living in a State of Ihsan
Ihsan is the ultimate state of mindfulness (Muraqabah). When a person attains Ihsan, they perform their prayers with immense concentration because they feel they are standing directly in front of the King. Outside of prayer, a person with Ihsan will not cheat, lie, or harm others, because they are acutely aware that Allah is watching their every move.
The Pursuit of Excellence
Ihsan is not limited to ritual worship; it applies to all aspects of life. It means doing your job perfectly, treating your parents with the utmost kindness, and interacting with creation flawlessly, all because you know the Creator is watching.
